Scope and Contents

Senator, judge, cotton planter and naturalist, he opened his home in Claiborne, Alabama to many explorers and collectors who were passing through. Elected a correspondent of the Academy in 1832, he, several times, attended courses of lectures at the Academy of Natural Sciences, as he did also in New Haven.

John Torrey Collection of Letters

Originally assembled by Torrey as an autograph collection from which a series was chosen for the Academy, perhaps purchased by John Redfield who combined it with the Elias Durand collection of 109 letters and enlarged it to the present proportions. Most of the letters are dated 1809-1859, with six earlier and two later ones. A typescript index and a microfilm copy of the originals are on file, Analyzed from A through J only.

Scope and Contents The Samuel Gibson Dixon Papers include correspondence from, to, or copied to Samuel Gibson Dixon, who was President of the Academy of Natural Sciences from 1891-1918. A large chunk of this correspondence pertains to the discussion of renovations being made to the Academy building, most particularly building a new library, and the collection includes continuous conversation between Dixon, The Snead & Co.
